Bellydance Basics

Congratulations!  You've taken the plunge and have decided to try Bellydancing!  Literally translated Raqs Sharqi means "Dance of the Near East" but is also referred to as Cabaret.  This is the style that most Westerners are familiar with as it is often seen in restaurants, festivals, weddings, and various other celebrations.  Traditionally Raqs Sharqi is an improvised solo dance, however dancers may also dance choreographed pieces in groups. This is where it all begins!  Learn basic bellydance technique and gain a better understanding of this ancient celebration of the female form.  We'll put it all together in a fun choreography.

Beyond Basics X-treme with Nuwayrah
Thursday 7:45 - 9:15pm
$165/10 weeks

Fine tune your craft while you hone your skills and develop your stage presence. This term we'll be tackling two choreographies from different ends of the spectrum; Shaabi and Egyptian Classical.

Tribal Fusion

Prerequisite at least one session of Intermediate Bellydance or permission from the instructor.
Tribal Fusion flowed out of American Tribal Style and is sometimes an improvised art form, but certainly not always. From my humble point  of view, I would say that the key word in Fusion style dance is “evolution.” Oriental, Cabaret and  American Tribal Style provide the solid platform from which Fusion artists can  jump in order to create their ever-changing style. Tania likes to think of her particular style as "Theatrical Fusion" as she likes to tell stories (usually slightly weird ones) through dance.

Tribal Fusion with Tania
Tuesday 6:00 - 7:30pm

Picture
This September marks 10 years as a dance teacher for Tania, and she's feeling both nostalgic and super grateful about it. She wanted this term's choreography to be a ode to her students, but what song could possibly be epic enough to encapsulate the gifts the incredible women at School of Raq have given her? These students who have amazed her, supported her (and each other), given her strength, and made her laugh her butt off? And then it hit her: This is Me by Keala Settle (from The Greatest Showman). Get ready to celebrate the awesomeness that is you in a broadway-infused, multi-prop extravaganza that is fully inspired by the students, past and present, of School of Raq. No beards required for this one.
